The SST Standard program follows the Long-Term Athlete Development model “Skier Essentials / Learn to Train” stage. Athletes in this group are working on their skiing skills during directed free skiing and gate training (in race training courses). Mileage, skiing as much as possible with the program and with family and friends, is very important in ski racing development. Learning and refining skiing skills and using those skills on the mountain and in the race course are the goals for these athletes. Athletes in this program ski one weekend day each week from Dec 1st to March 31.
The athletes in this program can race in 4 races over the winter. Racing is optional and a family choice. Not all children choose to race in their first years of training. There are races scheduled at Stevens Pass and at other resorts in western Washington.
SST programs are structured to encourage athletes to obtain all the basic skiing skills by age 12, allowing them to move towards skill refinement as they enter middle school. The goal is to provide the athletes opportunity, through ski race training, ski racing and ski cross competition, to continue their athletic development and to become excellent all mountain skiers who can continue to enjoy the mountains for the rest of their active lives.
